Building resilient settlements in a time of HIV/AIDS: A study of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro's informal settlement response

Stacey-Leigh Joseph

This report explores the settlement response by the NMBM from the HIV/AIDS perspective that is set out in HIV/AIDS and Sustainable Human Settlements development in South Africa: An Introductory Guide for Municipal Practitioners (an Isandla Institute Publication). The aim of the study is to determine the extent to which HIV/AIDS is currently being factored into human settlement design and planning practices of NMBM. A second aim is to determine the usefulness and relevance of the Guide in influencing existing settlement planning and design practices in municipalities in order to take more cognisance of, and responsibility for, HIV/AIDS. A final aim is to document the experiences of NMBM in responding to the enormous and complex challenge of planning and developing human settlements that will make a meaningful difference in lives of its residents.
