GGLN Position on the Introduction of a Single Election for South Africa

While local government in South Africa is a distinctive, interdependent and interrelated sphere of government, with its own elected leadership, in many respects the consolidation of local government's 'developmental local government' is still in its infancy and, with the right type of government-wide interventions and support programmes, needs time to come to maturity. Given that this is a critical momentfor local government, it is crucial that any decision made serves to strengthen rather than weaken local government accountability. It is against this view that the GGLN has formulated its perspective on the mooted single election for South Africa.
